To create a cloudy environment for ‘Wasted On You’, the production brought a couple of options to set that included a large smoke machine and tons of dry ice. Even using “heavy smoke” in the smoke machine, it refused to stay close to the ground and filled the entire set in a fog that had to be vented. Vapor from the dry ice only traveled for a foot or two in any direction before dissipating, so it was impossible to cover the relatively large set for the wide shots.
In the end, the only way to achieve it was to composite elements in post, which required extensive rotoscoping. With a deadline that didn’t allow for much in the way of fluid dynamics, we mostly kept to composited elements and tried to keep it subtle where possible. Some additional cloud cutouts were comped for the opening shot, and some additional animation provided by Mary Vertulfo was composited into the canvas at the end of the video.
